Commission process & information

(with thanks to blogger Louise Mum Of Boys And Mabel for permission to share images of Mabel’s portrait).

Turnaround varies from 2 days to 2 months, depending on the nature of the work and the time of year (December is always busy). I am as flexible as possible, shape my process around your requirements, but here are the key steps:

Enquiry

You can tell me what you are looking for, share some photos, and I will give you an idea of what is possible, costs, timescales etc. It’s no problem if you’re not quite sure what you want, absolutely sure, or somewhere in between. It’s also no problem if you decide not to take it any further - I won’t stalk you, charge you, or add you to a mailing list.

I can help select the best reference photos. Please see styles for examples of the techniques available. Features from different photos can be combined, backgrounds and clothing can be changed! Sometimes (where the portrait subject is deceased) the available photos are of limited quality. I get great satisfaction from bringing loved ones to life in a work of art. For pets, I can generally infer missing details with reference to breed photos for pedigree animals. For people, I can work from assorted photos to piece together a likeness.

As part of this discussion we can include framing options, and if you require, then I can include that in the invoice.

Ordering

Up to this point my service is free and without obligation. If you would like to proceed, you can order here, or if you prefer I can email you an invoice that can be paid securely online using Debit card, Credit card, Paypal, or direct transfer. Please see prices for an indication of costs.

Full payment is required in order to be added to my commission waiting list, and will ensure that your quoted amount is not affected by any subsequent price increase. Please see terms and conditions

Progress

portrait-progress.jpg

As work starts on your commission, I send a series of photos to allow you to see and comment on progress. The first one can be a very early ‘block-in’, and thereafter detail is added and features are refined. At all stages I actively seek your input and feedback. Customers usually find this an exciting insight into the development of their unique artwork, and enjoy the process.

Once the artwork is complete, I send a photo of it, often loosely set in a mount or frame, for you to check. I have an innately expressive style, aiming to achieve both a great likeness, and a certain vitality. My work will always contain lively traces of the artistic process, such as visible brushstrokes, pencil lines, and other elements that distinguish it from a photograph or computer-generated portrait.

Sometimes very subtle adjustments can have a profound affect on expression - I offer unlimited revisions until you are 100% happy with your portrait. Please see terms and conditions

Framing

Pencil, watercolour or linocut

solid-wood-frame.jpg

I offer high quality reasonably priced frames, handmade in the UK, and ideal for pencil and watercolour. Frames are solid FSC certified wood, painted a discreet slightly distressed warm grey to compliment the background colour of the drawing. Professionally cut white mount card (acid-free to prevent yellowing core), and sealing tape on the back complete the finish. If you would like a different frame style I can organise this from a wide selection, and invoice you separately.

I frame your picture 'portrait' or 'landscape' depending on the drawing layout, ready to hang

Oil painting

Oil paintings are done on a gallery wrapped canvas. These can be shipped and hung as they are (without a frame), or the canvas can be removed and rolled for shipping. I can arrange for the painting to be stretched and framed in my local framer, or a send it direct to your local framer, where you can arrange framing yourself. We can discuss this at any point during the commissions, and if you require the work to be framed I can quote and organise this separately.

Once the commission is finished, we can look at (or revisit) framing options, and I can arrange for this to be done.

Alternatively I can send the unframed picture to you, or your local framer, where you can arrange framing yourself.

Giftwrapping

Your picture (whether framed or unframed) can be beautifully wrapped at no extra charge. During the ordering process you can specify a message, to be handwritten on the gift label
