Judi & Roberta - posthumous portrait

This much loved lady had the pleasure of knowing her latest grandchild was on the way, but very sadly she died before the baby was born.

I was able to pick from a wide range of family photos, to find something that would work as a composite of Judi’s pose and hairstyle (photographed holding another grandchild), the newborn Roberta, the babygrow, and the background. A really rewarding, challenging commission, as the light and angles are never exactly consistent when combining photos, so some whizzy woo was required. Throughout the process I checked in with the family about decisions, likeness, etc.

It was such a joy to receive this feedback, shared with kind permission: "Hi Gail...Tears all round ... couldn’t stop looking at it... Thank you so much for giving us this special moment. You really did grasp exactly what we wanted, and made her real again for us... thank you thank you".

Judi & Roberta. Oil on canvas 10x12”

I usually work a bit larger, often from life, but in this case the size was ideal, and the challenge was engrossing. Niche Frames did a great job of scanning and framing the painting, so it can be reprinted on paper or canvas for the family (part of my commission service).

Huge thanks to David, Judi’s husband (and Roberta’s grandfather) for allowing me to share this very personal commission.. For more information on my service, don’t hesitate to contact me, or see this page.
